Who did most to knock man off his pedestal?
because it marks the 400th anniversary of Galileo's first use of the
telescope. Unfortunately, as it is the 200th anniversary of Darwin's
birth, 2009 has also been appropriated as Darwin Year. Both anniversaries have good claims on our attention, so at New Scientist we find ourselves unable to decide which year matters most.

15 (More) Creative Works of Steampunk Art and Fashion
Steampunk art, fashion and culture has far outgrown its roots in retro science fiction, blossoming into an altered image of the distant past, filtered through a dream future world that might have been. Though firmly anchored in a gilded age when technology offered unlimited hope and promise, steampunk has transcended the limits of time and space by melding the modern with the moldering “brass with class“, one might say.

Magnetic Fields as Art
Curiously , this matches my previous post remarkably well!
They surround us, yet they can’t be seen. They shift vast currents through space, yet we rarely feel their presence. Interplanetary magnetic currents are undoubtedly one of the most mysterious aspects of the universe, but a new film by British filmmakers Ruth Jarman and Joe Gerhadt unlocks the beauty of these magnificent forces for all to see.

3D Graffiti
Whether walls or trains — graffiti need to be sprayed on solid, “real” backgrounds. Doesn't it?
This extended reality thus becomes a three-dimensional graffiti canvas, on which something completely new is created: street art of the next generation!

Girlfriend Upgrade
This is an old favourite of mine, which Ive dug out because I can.
A year ago, a friend of mine upgraded his version of Girfriend to GirlfriendPlus 1.0, which is a Terminate and Stay Resident version of Girfriend. He discovered that GirlfriendPlus 1.0 expires within a year if you don't upgrade to Fiancee 1.0. So he did. But soon after that, you have to upgrade to Wife 1.0, which he describes as a 'huge resource hog'. It has taken up all his space, so he can't load anything else.

Petition against Copyright extension.
If you are involved in any way with the music business, I can not stress the importance of this petition.
If you know what its on about, sign it.
If you don't know - read up here, & then sign it.
To explain in simple terms.
Current copyright for music in the UK is for 50 years.
Long enough for the artist to profit from their work.
The 'industry' wants to extend this to 95 years.
Why is this bad? - because music is a tangible part of a society.
If you excessively limit its use, it is detrimental to those who follow.
Why do you think you never hear the song 'Happy Birthday to you' in films? Its copyrighted to an American owner who charges excessively for its use.
Surely a piece of music so ingrained into our culture, should, after a reasonable amount of time, make its way into our shared pool of culture.

Very sad to report that TVcatchup has been nobbled. It was an online video recorder (PVR) that seems to have upset the UK's broadcasting industry.
As ever, good reporting from The Register
